The city pillar was installed to symbolize the stability of power when the Bangkok city established. The King Rama I of the current Chakri Dynasty built the first city pillar on April 21, 1782 when he moved his capital city from Thonburi to Bangkok. Made of cassia wood (famous as Chaiyapruek in Thai) gilded with gold leaves, the pillar was the very first architecture built by King Rama I, prior to the Grand Palace.
Serving as the Bangkok’s spiritual substance, the City Pillar Shrine is in phallus shape and embodies the city’s guardian spirit (Phra Sayam Thewathirat). The excellent La’kon gaa bon (commissioned dance) may be encountered by you if you are lucky enough. It offers very interesting show, as well as their brilliant costumes.
